Search Federal Prison Releases

Finding someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons system requires a national search, even when an arrest, court event, or temporary hold has a Dorchester County connection. No BOP institution was identified in Dorchester County. The BOP locator covers sentenced federal prisoners and many former inmates, while federal court records and the U.S. Marshals custody route matter before sentence or during transport. A county jail departure does not establish federal release, and a BOP result does not establish the end of every court condition or custody hold.

No Dorchester County BOP Facility

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a national prison system. Research found no BOP institution in Dorchester County. The federal entry in the Facility Map therefore represents a custody and release-search channel, not a local building, booking desk, or Sheriff-operated jail.

This absence prevents several common errors. L.C. Knight Dorchester County Detention Center is a county jail. Lieber and MacDougall are South Carolina Department of Corrections prisons. None is a BOP institution. A federal detainee can sometimes be housed under contract or moved on a federal writ, but the underlying authority must be established from the federal case and custodian.

Search the National BOP Locator

The BOP Inmate Locator generally covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. Search nationwide rather than by Dorchester County. It accepts a BOP register number and may also support DCDC, FBI, or INS identifiers. A name search can be refined with age, race, and sex fields shown by the official interface.

  1. Open the official BOP Inmate Locator.
  2. Use the register number when known because it is more stable than a name.
  3. For a name search, enter the full legal name and use available refiners to separate similar people.
  4. Match the result to the federal case, age, and known custody history.
  5. Record the exact status and release date, if displayed, plus the retrieval date.
  6. Use the federal docket or BOP contact route when the locator does not explain the next legal stage.

The locator is the right starting point for a sentenced federal prisoner. It is not a current county roster, a state DOC search, or a complete record of federal pretrial custody. A missing result should lead to identifier and case checks, not an immediate conclusion.

Read a Federal Release Result

A former federal inmate result can display “Released” and a date. That is evidence of the BOP custody event. State the result narrowly as release from BOP on the displayed date. It does not prove that federal supervised release ended or that another sovereign did not take custody.

“Not in BOP custody” is also narrow. It can mean the person is no longer held by BOP, but it does not exclude county or state custody, immigration detention, federal pretrial custody outside a BOP institution, or a record outside the locator's normal historical coverage. The phrase is not the same as “free.”

BOP release
The end of the Bureau of Prisons custody event shown by its record.
Supervised release
A federal court-ordered community term administered through federal probation, separate from South Carolina PPP.
Federal writ
Authority for a temporary federal movement that may not end the underlying state or county custody.
Detainer
A request or hold that can cause transfer when one custodian's term ends.

Federal Pretrial and USMS Custody

A person charged federally may be held under U.S. Marshals authority before sentencing. That person may be placed in a contracted jail and may never appear as part of the sentenced BOP prison population during that stage. Trace the federal case, the District of South Carolina court record, the U.S. Marshals district, and the named holding facility.

USMS does not offer a broad public historical released-inmate locator equivalent to BOP's tool. Ask which facility physically holds the person and which court order controls detention or release. The facility can confirm its own custody event, while the federal case supplies the judicial basis.

A temporary federal writ can move a person from state or county custody for a federal proceeding without ending the original custody. If a Dorchester jail record says transfer or federal writ, do not describe the movement as release to the community. Check whether L.C. Knight, SCDC, or the federal authority retained the primary hold.

Important: BOP, USMS, and the federal court serve different roles. Identify sentenced custody, pretrial custody, and judicial supervision before reporting a release.

Dorchester County Federal Transfer Checks

A Dorchester County connection may begin with a local arrest or county booking. If the L.C. Knight release record names federal custody as the destination, the county event ended but custody may have continued. Preserve the receiving agency, timestamp, booking number, and federal case identifier.

Call L.C. Knight at 843-832-0215 only to confirm its own county custody episode. The Dorchester Sheriff is not the owner of a later BOP release date. Once the record identifies a federal transfer, move to the federal case, USMS route, holding facility, and BOP locator as the person's stage requires.

The same rule works in reverse. A BOP release result does not establish whether South Carolina or Dorchester County immediately took custody on a pending warrant. Search another system only when the case or release record gives a reason. Preserve each agency's exact wording.

Federal Release Records and Proof

Rank the proof by record owner. A BOP locator result supplies a public status and date for a covered former federal inmate. The federal judgment and docket explain the sentence and any supervised-release term. BOP records can supply authoritative custody detail, while the physical holding facility owns its local admission and departure entry.

For a certified judicial record, use the federal court clerk. For BOP custody records, use the Bureau's official records channels. Do not request a federal release file from the Dorchester Sheriff merely because the arrest occurred locally. The Sheriff can produce only the county records it maintains.

Match at least two identifiers. A register number plus name is stronger than name alone. Add date of birth, federal case number, and known facility when available. Record the search time because a transfer or release can change a live status.

Dorchester Geography Does Not Pick BOP

Dorchester County includes a county jail and two SCDC prisons, yet no local BOP prison was found. This makes the word “Dorchester” a poor database selector. Custody authority selects the system. County detention belongs with L.C. Knight; state imprisonment belongs with SCDC; federal sentenced custody belongs with BOP.

Lieber and MacDougall are not federal prisons even if a federal writ affects someone housed there. L.C. Knight does not become a federal prison if it temporarily holds a person for another authority. Labels in the court order, detainer, booking record, and receiving-agency record determine the correct search.

The Dorchester County release-record search compares the county, SCDC, VINE, federal, and immigration channels when the custody owner is unknown.

Confirm a Completed Federal Release

Begin with the BOP locator for a sentenced federal prisoner. Read a displayed release date as a BOP event. Then review the federal case for supervised release or another order. If the person was pretrial, use the court, USMS district, and holding facility rather than assuming BOP has the full history.

If the record says not in BOP custody, check spelling, identifiers, historical coverage, pretrial status, and another named sovereign. Do not convert an absence into a claim that the person returned home. An immigration transfer, state warrant, or county hold can follow a federal custody endpoint.

A precise final statement names the custodian and date. It avoids merging federal release, federal supervision, and release from all custody. That precision is especially important when the person's connection to Dorchester County is an arrest location rather than a federal prison location.
